Aims & Promise
Our AIM
Simple really. It’s to:
- provide excellent training in anatomy, physiology and pathology for CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) and other practicing therapists;
- provide more excellent training with new courses, ongoing activities and opportunities to review courses for reduced rates;
- keep you up to date, remembering and inspired enough to keep adding more;
- to play a small part in assisting anyone working in CAM to use this understanding and, at the end of the day (or course!), to become better practitioners.
Just like many other professions, complementary health practitioners of many modalities are required to keep updating both their practical and theoretical knowledge and skills. CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development and has become a bit of a buzz word in the complementary and alternative medicine fields. Our courses are accepted by a number of the overseeing bodies that require CPD (see a bit more on this below).
When we love what we do there is a natural desire to find out more, hone our skills, add more to the pot and be the best we can be. As you will have gathered by now, we focus on a small chunk of this ongoing development as we believe that good and regular doses of A&P helps us become better practitioners,
Why? Because then:
WE CAN be more accurate in our treatments - whatever our method of working with the body, the more we understand it, the more accurately we can direct our hands and our intention- WE CAN be clearer about when we can treat and when to refer - credibility in any profession is built by people doing their job well, yet knowing their limits
- WE CAN communicate better with clients and other health professionals - about what we are doing as well as the effects our work may be having. When we need to work alongside doctors or other professionals we can talk in their language and continue to build up positive relationships
- WE CAN be evermore integrated and holistic by not leaving the body out of our energetic and other work (or our energetic and other work out of the body science understanding!)
Our PROMISE
To keep trying to get better and better at what we do, so:
- WE WIILL do everything we can think of to make your learning as easy, fun and engaging as possible
- WE WILL continue to develop post graduate training that serves the needs of practicing therapists
- WE WILL aim to ensure that these answer the questions that naturally occur after you've been practicing a while and help build your knowledge step by step
- WE WILL offer information about research and practice to capture your attention and interest
- WE WILL give practical application to as much of the theory as possible
- WE WILL NEVER FORGET the emotions, mind and spirit and their importance in all contributions to 'BODY SCIENCE'
What people have said about their experience of College of Body Science courses includes:
- Our courses make the A&P relevant
- Our courses make your life easier
- We teach as innovatively as possible, presenting information in various ways and repeating and reviewing it in different fashions, so facts, names and implications stay with you
- Our courses inspire you to know more
- You get great CPD!
- Our students enjoy making the connections between the theory and their practice
- They say that putting everything into place aids their memory recall and retention dramatically
Aims & Promises In The CAM World At Large
The Complementary and Alternative Medicine world, apart from anything else, is GROWING. More and more people are training, practicing and most importantly USING these approaches. It is estimated that there are around 40,000 practitioners in the many disciplines that are termed Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). There are 36,000 GPs. While it is fair to say that most CAM practitioners do not see as many patients as GPs, hundreds of thousands of people visit some form of CAM practitioners every year - it seems we are here to stay!
But, there is a huge difference in the length and depth of trainings about which the public may not have enough information to ask the right questions. So many therapy groups are starting to self regulate - the most important reason for this? To safeguard the public so they know that a practitioner has an acceptable level of training, knowledge and safety.
Many training and overseeing bodies have now developed or are in the process of developing programmes to support this process of self-regulation for a number of specific therapies. The government is also keen for this to happen. It will gradually affect everyone working as an alternative or complementary therapist. Firm recommendations have been given that suggest:
- training courses should become standardised, accredited and validated
- continuing professional development should be a core requirement
- therapists should have a clear understanding of the principles of evidence based medicine and healthcare
- disciplines should be clear about their limits of competence
When we started nine years ago this process was only just beginning, but many steps are been taken in roughly the right direction! So more and more of us are being called to be accountable and responsible. Why again? For the safety of the public. Those we are wanting to assist. So let's get our training houses in as good an order as we can!
This is the other reason we do what we do. It is one way of our ways of contributing to the field. Hopefully it helps practitioners become better and better too, and as we said, WE LOVE IT!
